Hi all, I'm trying to record the midi written in clips on track one directly to track two. Its driving me a crazy so I've removed all instruments and fx to make it as simple as possible and so I can figure out how this is working. Here's the problem: 1) I set up Track 2 to receive Audio NONE, Midi All from Track 1 2) I choose arm on Track 2 3) I leave the default Record: input. 4) I see it moving the red midi signal bar on Track 2. 5) I record a few bars but i just I get blank midi clips. Nothing from track 1 gets recorded to track 2. 6) I pull out my hair for a while. 7) I play around and find I have to choose Record: output (MIDI) for track 2 to get it to record the midi coming in from Track 1. Can someone explain why I have to do step 7? It seems illogical to me. I want to record midi coming in to Track 2 not its midi output. Thanks in advance, Phil
RE: (Solved) bouncing midi from one track to another
as far as i know record input doesn't actually record input from a bus (wish i was wrong there) so - record output might work - though ive never done that with midi also enabling FIP might work or just drag and drop from track 1 to 2 - and glue!
RE: (Solved) bouncing midi from one track to another
Thanks for the prompt reply. "record input doesn't actually record input from a bus" That's a weird limitation. Strange... I don't want to copy the midi because I want to record the midi output of Track 1 (say I have some cool midi effect) to track 2 so I can use it later. I guess I need to set up track 2 with no instruments or fx, and just set it to record midi output. Cheers, Phil

RE: (Solved) bouncing midi from one track to another
what exactly are you trying to do? If you're wanting to record the midi instrument onto a separate track all you have to do is render it as a stem and import it into the project.
RE: (Solved) bouncing midi from one track to another
I'm probably missing something here but why not just duplicate the track and change the duplicate to what you need? Right click on the original track Fader/Duplicate tracks. If you want the original track to now send midi data to the second track you can now use a send from the 1st track to a receive on the 2nd. HTH :)
RE: (Solved) bouncing midi from one track to another
I'm sure there's a way to get the result you want without three tracks. I would probably have to sit down with you in person and figure it out, but I'm almost certain it's possible. 'Almost' being the operative word. :D Anyway, I'm glad you at least found a way to do it.
RE: (Solved) bouncing midi from one track to another
MIDI Input is for MIDI from external devices and the Reaper Virtual keyboard only. The MIDI is sent from one track to another and you would Record the MIDI output of that receiving track as you have found. In the past, I had thought that MIDI from another track should be regarded as an additional MIDI Input too, but that is not the case. I still think that this is an intuitive implementation. "Record Output" would still be implemented to record the MIDI (or audio) output by a track. Here's a screenshot / mockup showing what is currently implemented and how MIDI received from another track could be seen as an additional MIDI input. [I think that I'll raise this as an FR in the Issue Tracker.] Big pic: Uploaded with

RE: (Solved) bouncing midi from one track to another
I'm trying to do something similar. Since Reaper has no logical editor I would like to alter MIDI data using MIDI plugins, which is easy enough, but then record the result as a basic MIDI file. I had thought is would be possible to take the MIDI post FX from one track and record it onto another track. From other posts it sounds like this is not possible. With Reaper's amazing routing flexibility that seems odd. I've tried everything I can think of, so if anyone has worked out a solution, please spread the joy. Thanks

yeah the terminology is confusing at first... 'record output'... you just have to see it 'the reaper way'... which is that it is saying 'record the output from something else'...[like another track]... drove a little nutz long ago also but used to it now.
