Here's one that's really got me scratching my head. When I play a note on a VSTi in Reaper, sometimes the pitch shifts or jumps around. It's the same if I'm using my MIDI controller or the on-screen keyboard. The same thing happens if I use SAVIHost, a stand-alone VSTi host. Did a modulation message get "stuck" in my computer somehow? This is driving me nuts! I can't reliably play even a single note. It's a show-stopper. Ideas, anyone? Thanks in advance.
After rebooting my machine, at this moment the problem seems to be gone, with my VSTi in stand-alone mode and no other user applications running. You might be on to something with the card shifting...though I think I heard one note wobble through more than two pitches, so I'm not sure about that. Another thing: after trying to solve the last issue I posted here, the other day, I had switched off the Windows 7's speaker's "exclusive mode," and it's back on again, somehow. Maybe that had something to do with it. Thanks for the ideas, Chris!

Nuts. Problem is ongoing. I'm getting warmer, though. The issue goes away when my controller is not plugged into the computer...so, something is coming from the controller, even when I'm not playing it, that is randomly messing with the pitch. I have a .wav of the resulting sound...not sure how to upload that here. It's 40 seconds of a single note that randomly jumps up or down a fraction of a step here and there. Turning the controller off and on doesn't fix it. Bad controller? Junk DNA in the MIDI stream? Bad cable? That doesn't seem likely to me. Still stumped. 8 [

It seems to happen with any VSTi in my computer, whether inside Reaper, or stand-alone. Oddly, it doesn't affect my QY70 (rompler), which responds normally to the pitch bend wheel and other MIDI controls. I'm going to try a factory reset on the controller keyboard (the UMX490) later today. I'll come back with the results of that. As for "put ReaControlMIDI before the VSTi," I'm a complete novice with Reaper--haven't actually been able to use it at all yet, so I need to learn more about all that.

Thanks, Andy, that Midi Monitor shows that there is intermittent spurious pitch bend data coming from my Behringer UMX490 MIDI controller. Curiously, the round MIDI port, which normally feeds the "rompler," has somewhat less of the spurious data, compared to the squarish (printer type) USB port that feeds the computer. So, my problem is that I have an out of control controller.
